Everything About BMX Bikes
BMX is a spectacular and challenging sport, also known as bicycle motocross. Whether you ride just for fun or want to compete seriously, having a good BMX bike is essential. But what should you consider when buying one? And what are the different BMX disciplines? On this page, you'll find everything about BMX bikes, from choosing the right size to useful tips for beginners.
What is a BMX bike?
A BMX bike is a special off-road bicycle designed for racing and stunts. The name 'BMX' stands for 'Bicycle Motocross' and perfectly describes what the bike is meant for: extreme performance and agility. These bikes are smaller than standard bicycles, have a strong frame, wide tires, and often no gears. They are built to withstand hard impacts and rough riding.
BMX bikes are generally more affordable than other types of bikes. An entry-level BMX race bike can be purchased new starting at €480. If you're looking to buy a BMX, keep in mind that there are small differences between bikes designed for different disciplines.
What BMX bike size do I need?
BMX bikes come in various sizes, depending on your height. Below is an overview:
| Rider Height | Frame Size |
|---|---|
| < 122 cm | Micro Mini |
| 115 - 125 cm | Mini |
| 120 - 138 cm | Junior |
| 133 - 150 cm | Expert |
| 145 - 158 cm | Expert XL |
| 155 - 169 cm | Pro / Pro 21 |
| 160 - 175 cm | Pro XL / Pro 21.5 |
| 170 - 179 cm | Pro XXL / Pro 22 |
| 177 - 190 cm | Pro XXXL / Pro 22.5 |
| > 186 cm | Pro XXXXL / Pro 23 |
BMX Disciplines
BMX bikes are designed for different disciplines, each with its own specific characteristics:
Racing
BMX racing is all about speed. The track consists of hard gravel or asphalt surfaces with jumps and turns. BMX race bikes are lightweight, have narrow tires, and often clip-in pedals for maximum power.
Freestyle Disciplines
- Street: Riders use stairs, rails, and other obstacles to perform tricks. Tires are smooth for maximum grip.
- Park/Vert: Riding in skateparks and halfpipes, requiring an extra sturdy frame.
- Trails/Dirt Jumping: Overcoming obstacles and jumps in an off-road setting, where control and balance are essential.
- Flatland: Performing tricks and stunts on a flat surface, similar to breakdancing on a bike.
What to Consider When Buying a BMX Bike
When purchasing a BMX bike, there are a few important factors to keep in mind:
- Size: Choose the right frame size and wheel size based on your height.
- Weight: Lighter bikes are better for racing, while stronger bikes are needed for freestyle disciplines.
- Material: Aluminum is lightweight and ideal for racing, while steel is stronger and better suited for freestyle.
- Brakes: Most modern BMX race bikes come with disc brakes for better stopping power.
Tips for Beginners
- Choose a discipline that suits you and get a bike that matches it.
- Keep your bike clean and well-maintained.
- Start with basic tricks like the Bunny Hop and Manual.
- Always wear protection: helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and body armor.
